Construído em 1944 por Joaquim Rolla, para ser o maior cassino hotel da América do Sul, é em estilo normando, apresentando em seu interior o estilo “Hollywoodiano”. O estilo normando é característico dos cassinos europeus que faziam sucesso na Normandia, antes da Segunda Guerra Mundial, e o interior lembra cenários de filmes americanos, daí o estilo no Brasil. Os ambientes foram decorados por Doroth Draper, cenógrafa dos filmes famosos de Hollywood. Numa área de 50.000m2, o Quitandinha foi construído para ser a “Capital do jogo bancado no Brasil”. Banheiros em mármore, lustres com pingentes de cristal e um sistema de iluminação que seria suficiente para iluminar uma cidade de 60.000 habitantes. Seus salões podem abrigar até 10.000 pessoas simultaneamente. A cúpula do Salão Mauá é a maior do mundo com 30m de altura e 50m de diâmetro, sendo comparada a redoma da Catedral de São Pedro em Roma; o Teatro Mecanizado com três palcos giratórios tem capacidade para 2.000 pessoas. O lago tem formato do mapa do Brasil com o farol na Ilha de Marajó. Os hóspedes do Hotel Quitandinha eram milionários, atrizes, vedetes, políticos que desejavam obter o máximo em matéria de bem viver. Em 30 de maio de 1946, o Pres. Dutra proibiu o jogo no país e assim, o Quitandinha acabou não conseguindo sobreviver como hotel, seus apartamentos foram pouco a pouco sendo vendidos e a partir de janeiro de 1989 foi restaurado e atualmente a parte social é utilizada para congressos, eventos, shows e feiras. |
