Notes |
Clark 1992 One of the rituals of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter was the procession of a courtesan to meet a patron at one of the assignation teahouses ('ageya') which lined the main street of the quarter, Nakanocho (see also no. 63). Here a manservant carrying a long-poled umbrella attempts to protect the courtesan as she walks, tilting her head to avoid the shower, towards the teahouse hung with reed blinds, accompanied by two 'kamuro'. The pattern of chrysanthemums and butterflies on her robes and the flowering bushclover on those of her attendants suggest that this is autumn, a season prone to sudden showers. Though this is possibly a section from a handscroll, the position of the seal suggests that it is more likely a sheet from a large album, possibly showing scenes in the Yoshiwara at different times of the year. As in the previous painting (no. 18), the figures have Moromasa's habitual red outline, yet with a sweetness and intimacy not found in his larger works. There is considerable worm damage to the top left-hand corner of the painting. |

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
