Description Bhutan: Painted jataka Thangka. Phajoding Gonpa, Thimphu, 18th-19th Century. Scenes from the traditional jataka, or Buddha life-cycle stories. The Jatakas are amongst the earliest Buddhist literature, with metrical analysis methods dating their composure to around the 4th century BCE. A thangka, also romanised as 'tangka', 'thanka' or 'tanka', is a Tibetan silk painting generally depicting a Buddhist deity or mandala.
