Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pahiyangala Rock Cave Monastery is situated 68 kilometers away from Colombo in the Bulathsinhala electorate. The biggest Rock Cave in Sri Lanka, Pahiyangala has a history dating back to the pre-historic era. Excavations carried out by archeologists have revealed that the rock cave belongs to the Stone Age period. A number of artifacts and fossils including human skulls and weapons made out of stone and animal bone discovered from the cave have proved that this pre-historic settlement dates back to 37,000 years and is the most ancient habitation of Homo-Sapiens in Asia. The Pahiyangala Rock Cave is at a 400 feet elevation above sea level. The mouth of the Cave is 175 feet high and 160 feet wide.
