| Description |
Tragedy struck the United States Navy on this day 20 June 1943 when 10 marines drowning during a training exercise at Paekakariki on the Kapiti coast. The marines were from the USS American Legion and were heading back to the ship late at night when their boat capsized in stormy seas. As wartime censorship had decreed that there should be no publicity about the United States presence in New Zealand there was no publicity around an event which would otherwise have been headline news. The United States Navy must have conducted its own investigation as the drownings were not investigated by the New Zealand coroner and to this day there is no record of the deaths within the correspondence of this department. There is, however, now a memorial to the 10 dead men at Queen Elizabeth Park near Paekakariki. This was unveiled in 2012. Shown here is a view of the coast of Paekakariki, scene of the tragedy.
