Description |
English: This object is probably a copper-alloy U-shaped padlock bolt from a box or barrel padlock. It has a rectangular split hinge terminal which is filled with corroded iron, this terminal measures 21mm in length and 6mm in width. Immediately after the terminal there is a circumferencial raised ridge, behind this, on the outer edge, there is a small circular projection with a central circular perforation. The shaft is then bent at right angles, forming a U-shape, 33mm in length, the terminal of which tapers to a rounded point. A similar U-shaped padlock bolt has been discovered at Winchester although this parallel does not have the projecting loop, and has a split terminal rather than a hinged one, despite this their functions are likely to be similar. This example and its parallel are medieval and possibly 11th century in date (Biddle 1990, 1010-1011, figure 312). |
