| Description |
English: Packhorse Yard, Leeds. Looking from Lands Lane towards Briggate, parallel to Commercial Street (back of its buildings are on the right). Out of shot on the left is a Blue Plaque which reads "Joseph Aspdin (1778 - 1855) Portland Cement, one of mankinds most important manufactured materials, was patented by Joseph Aspdin, a Leeds bricklayer, on 21st October 1824. Aspdin lived in this yard (then called Slip Inn Yard) and first sold his cement in Angel Inn Yard".
The Packhorse is evidently an ancient building. Just after taking this photo I was asked to take part in a survey by a Market Researcher, and was taken to an upstairs room in the inn (to watch adverts for sweets). The roof beams of this room were visible and clearly several hundred years old. |
