English: Pack Horse Bridge, Calverley / Horsforth. Looking north across this ancient bridge (the view from the other side can be seen at SE2237).
The bridge was used by pack horses carrying goods between Horsforth and Calverley. Notice that the parapets are 2 different heights - supposedly this was because the bridge was not quite wide enough for 2 laden horses to pass, so it allowed for the pack of one horse to overhang the parapet. I think that explanation is a bit unlikely - why not have 2 low parapets? |
