(See next photo.) Amazing all that crap fits into there, isn't it? It took me about 15 minutes to do so! Yes, there is a good reason the majority of that stuff never leaves the pack! In the end I figure I managed to find 3.4 kg of stuff to leave behind(!) Maybe it doesn't sound like much as a proportion of the probably 70-80 lb. bike and gear. But think of it as a little under two full water bottles, and think of how much easier it is to ride on those deep gravel roads coming *back* from the trailhead! (Yes, yes, coming back is typically downhill, but there are some up-hill sections to use as a proper comparison...) Things that got gonged (for laughs all around): a sixth shirt (damned thing didn't fit anyway!) a forth pair of shoes (call me Imelda...) a bunch of pens another notepad a big wad of photocopied descriptions of plant families a bunch of JLM maps -- all utter crap! a Spanish-only dictionary whose only purpose was to get wet and never fully dry out more razor blades more toothpaste more dental floss more toothbrushes more soap (this will come as a great surprise, but you can buy these things in Chile) an awl and big spool of thread I use for making moccasins (highly useful for maintenance, and have used them several times already, but too heavy to justify) at least 6 extra tire irons (my god how many do I need?!!) a pair of sewing scissors (huh? how'd they end up in there??) a third spare camera (simply overkill) two more spare camera batteries (these Casio Exilims use *no* power...) my leather wallet (kinda nice but ultimately just not necessary) a small bottle of sunscreen (just filled my tiny tube up and left the rest) titanium pot, stove and 1-cup measure (but not the frying pan! :) spare chain (decided last minute that I will be able to limp to the next town no matter what happens to my existing chain) etc. It all adds up, even without sawing off my toothbrush handles. (Hmm, good idea... :) |
