s department.Not only were extensions and improve-ments of gas distributing systems madeeverywhere but important additions to gen-erating equipment were made at most ofour companys gas plants, notably atpivotal points, such as San Francisco, Oak-land, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, SanRafael and Marysville. All of these im-provements involved considerable expendi-ture but they were made necessary by theconstant growth of population as well asof industry all over our Pacific Serviceterritory. The most important point involved,naturally, was San Francisco, where ourgas plant at the Potrero has risen, duringa period of fifty-four years, from a dailyrated capacity of 500,000 cubic feet to oneof 30,000,000 cubic feet. During the pastyear two new oil gas generators were in-stalled there of an aggregate capacity of10,000,000 cubic feet and the constructionprogram for the present year includes theinstallation of two additional generatorsof similar capacity. Starting the first oil-gas generating installation at distributing system comprises another andsmaller plant, namely, the Metropolitan,with a capacity of 6,000,000 cubic feetdaily. From this combined service therewas manufactured and distributed during1924 a total of 8,547,047,000 cubic feetof gas and the peak day send-out was onDecember 19th last when 34,565,000 cubicfeet of gas was sent out through the mains.The great plant at the Potrero is situ-ated at the foot of Humboldt Street, onthe waters edge of San Francisco bay, andcovers an area of eleven acres. The firstplant at this location was built in the year1870, when gas w^s generated entirelyfrom coal. That plant consisted of thirt)^-six coal benches, six retorts to the bench,with, as before stated, a daily rated capacityof 500,000 cubic feet which, no doubt, wasconsidered of considerable magnitude atthat time.
