Text Appearing Before Image:
Manager A. L. Becker casting an eye over a newly completedship. certain proportion of air must be used inorder to support combustion. Tliis airmay be supplied at the point of flame, or,in the case of gas fuel, can be mixed priorto combustion. To obtain the localizedextreme temperature desired in many ap-plications the latter course is desirable. The superefiiciency, then, of a gas flamedepends to a great extent upon this mix-ing process. In large installations the saving in fuelthat can be effected by totally eliminatingthe human element in obtaining this mix-ture and substituting mechanical meansoftentimes justifies a large expenditure
Text Appearing After Image:
One of the Selas machines installed at the Schaw-Batcherplant. in securing apparatus designedfor the accurate premixing oper-ation. Such was the case at thisplant. Here the Selas apparatus isused. The machine consists offour essential parts: A pressure-reducing valve which reduces toatmospheric pressure the gas, which is bound to be suppliedwith some variation in pressurefrom the gas companys mains;a mixing chamber in which thegas and air of atmospheric pres-sures are admitted in the properproportion, usually one part ofgas to two parts of air; a com-pressor by means of which the^ mixture is delivered under theK desired pressure through the dis-tributing pipes to the variousburners; a pressure governorwhich controls the delivery pressure, atthe same time acting as a bypass for anyquantity of air and gas that may bemixed by the machine over and above theamount desired at any period. It can be seen that the possibilities ofincreasing efficiencies of operation by theuse of such apparatus
