There areplaces where you leave the car and standover the banks of that stream where therocks above almost join, so that the watersseem to dash through a tunnel, as it were.Everywhere there is leaping and tumblingover rock and fallen tree, and there ismaterial for the sketchbook at every turn.We found the source of the Rogue Riveron the west slope of the Cascade Dividenear the summit, where the altitude was6225 feet. The Government buildings arethere and there are signs of good care-taking and sjstem. It is only seven milesfrom there to Crater Lake, so we ran upand stood awhile on the edge of thatgreat natural bowl of rock that is sup-posed to be the remains of some hugevolcano whose top blew off and left anirregular saucer of several miles in diam-eter with precipitous sides overhangingthe bluest water that the ej^e of man evergazed upon.
