In 1906 the firstelectric pumping plantwas installed at MiddleRiver on the Old Jonestract, a reclamation of(3300 acres, belonging tothe Rindge Land andNavigation Company.Power was furnished bythe Pacific Gas and Elec-tric Compariy. Mr. LeeA. Phillips, whd at thattime was manager for theRindge Land and Navi-gation Company, keenlyappreciated the need ofbetter pumping facilitiesin order to get best results from the land,and the first system of complete drainageon any reclamation in this territory, bothin the way of ditches, canals and pump-ing machinery, was inaugurated by himon the Jones tract. This was the begin-ning, too, of the real successes in the rec-lamation of the lower lands. Larger leveeswere being constructed everywhere, andwhen it was found that electricity wouldinsure efficient and ample pumping facili-ties the work of reclamation developedvery rapidly. Since that time, practicallyno other power has been used for rec-lamation purposes anywhere in the Deltaregion.

On each one ofthese have been installed electric pump-ing plants, supplied with Pacific Serv-ice juice, in units from 100 h. p. to 200h. p., with a total of 2125 horsepower.This has necessitated, on the part of theelectric company, the construction ofmany miles of line, and, in order to givethe best se
