The Savery steam-actuated pumpingengine consisted of two oval chambers,A, into which steam was admitted andcondensed alternately. The operation was to admit a quantityof steam to one of the chambers, A, thenopen a cock connected to a cold watertank and allow the cold water to flowover the chamber, condensing the steamcontained in the chamber and forminga vacuum, thus drawing or sucking thewater from the sump below through thesuction check valve, D, then admittingsteam to the chamber, forcing the waterout through the check valve, B, on thedelivery pipe. This operation was keptup alternately between the two chambers,giving an almost constant flow of water. It appears that Savery used two boilers,one boiler for furnishing steam to thepump and the other for furnishing waterto the main boiler.
