In the fall of 1872, said Mr. Pile, Iwent on a hunting and fishing trip downMiddle River and stopped at ThomasThompsons place on what is now theupper division of Roberts Island. Thomp-son is still living in the neighborhood ofLathrop. At that time the Delta was allunder water and was nothing but a jun-gle. No reclamation work whatever hadbeen done. Thompson had bought the land fromthe State, paying for it $1 an acre andwas making his living fishing and rais-ing bees. There were no other residentswhatever except a few settlers on thehigh strip of ground along the San Joa-quin River side of the island.
