Gauge reading al)OUt 18 feet. and rain, but it is very seldom that youhear the old-timer cuss the snow, I know of no harder or more gruelingtask than a long trip through heavy snow.For instance, one of our operators oneday this winter made the trip up thehill to Drum Camp, a distance of oneand a half miles, with a pack on hisback and skis strapped to his feet. Ittook him over five hours to make thetrip, and if you dont think that washard work try it some time and see.Your pack straps bite into the musclesof your shoulders, the rain and sleet cutyour face, every time you step you sinka foot or eighteen inches and when youlift your foot you also lift the amountof snow that can cling to an eight- ornine-foot ski. When your trip is endedall you want is to liedown and curl up. Butwhat is past my under-standing is that nine menout of ten prefer lomake that trip than toput in the same time atsome easy task in camp!
