To this end, the plansand specifications for the tanks are beingpassed on, by Dr. Imhoff himself, andby Dr. Rudolph Hering, the ConsultingSanitary Engineer of New York City, who recommended and installed the Im-hoff tanks at Atlanta, Georgia. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF IMHOFF TANKS AT WINTERS CAPACITY. The present population ofWinters is about 1500. The disposalworks were designed to accomodatetwice this number, to avoid the necess-ity of immediately enlarging. The es-timated daily sewage flow is 7.5 gallonsper capita or 225,000 gallons for 3,000people. This is an average hourly flowof about 10,000 gallons. The sedimen-tation chambers are designed to give astorage period of three hours and havea capacity of 4,000 cubic feet equivalentto 30,000 gallons. The sludge chambers are made largeenough to store sludge for a period ofsix months. There are two suchchambers, circular with a diameter of

Eachof these communi-cates with the lower chamber through a10 inch slot. The bottoms slope towardthe slot at an angle of 4.S degrees whichis assumed to be steep enough for thesedimented solids to slide down and passinto the sludge chamber.
