Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On May 6, 2019, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the Pacific Northwest.

The image captures a small amount of British Columbia, Canada in the north, but primarily captures the United States. The state of Washington sits closer to Canada and Oregon is located south. The high peaks remain capped in snow, including the Rocky Mountains in the east and the Cascade Mountains which roughly parallel the coast.

The Cascades form a dividing line between the greener, forested landscapes of the coastal region and the tan colors of the dry Columbia Basin. Precipitation is plentiful near the coast and seaward slopes of the mountains, resulting in lush green vegetation. The Cascades stop the flow of rain-bearing air masses from reaching the basin, creating what is known as the “rain shadow” effect. The Columbia River curves through the basin, cuts through the Cascades and Columbia River Gorge, and then flows into the Pacific Ocean.
