It may be of interest to note that thetwo new cables are identical in con-struction to the four original ones. Aftera thorough investigation of all kinds of The old South Tow er at Crockett. consist of 19 strands of galvanizedplow steel wire twisted into cables,each having a diameter of seven-eighths of an incli and a brealvingstrength of about 48 tons, which isequivalent to 215,000 pounds persquare inch; whereas, the normalstrain in each cable as suspendedacross the strait is about 11 tons.Each cable was furnished in asingle piece 6,300 feet long. Theclearance above high water is ap-proximately 216 feet. Considerablechange in the construction on thetops of the towers was necessaryin order to properly accommodatetiie two additional cables. The fourwooden crossarms were replaced by threepairs of steel I-beams which overhangboth sides of the towers. The cablesrest on saddles at the extremities
