the rice fields ofButte County by the Sutter-Butte CanalCompany, the supply being taken fromFeather river about ten miles above Grid-ley. The system comprises over 100 milesof main canals and laterals and supplies ROBERTSONS. Department of Agriculture water to about 33,000 acres of land, ofwhich approximately 12,000 acres are inrice in 1914. To secure water from thissystem it is necessary to locate a water-right on the piece of land to be irrigated.The initial cost is $10 per acre and theannual rental charge for rice is %b peracre. The water-right contracts call fora continuous flow of one cubic foot persecond for each 53 % acres of rice. Ow-ing to an abundance of water in thecanals no attempt has been made tomeasure water to irrigators, and this hasresulted in an extravagant use of water.This must be evident to anyone who seesthe enormous waste of water along theroadsides. The fullest irrigation develop-ment will never be attained here untilthe water is sold to irrigators at so much
