LakeSpaulding was then a modest body ofwater, not more than 250,000,000 cubicfeet in capacity, hemmed in by more orless precipitous blutfs. It is in the sum-mit region of the Sierra Nevada, and ablack line upon the hillside to the southindicates the course of the Southern Pa-cific overland as it puffs its way up tothe apex not many miles distant. It isa region of rock and scrub, with hereand there a clump of fir to relieve theeye; but it is a region dear to the heartof every man who loves the free openair of the mountains and who has hada chance to wander there in days whetherof lei-sure or of toil. It is an historicalregion, too, made famous by Westernwriters whose books hold honored placein public and private libraries all overthe world; for it marks the course ofthe old emigrant trail.
