The disaster came without warning. About 9.15 a. m. smoke was noticed issuingfrom the ventilator of the boarding-house and the alarm was spread to everyone incamp. Everyone, except the operators on duty, was on the scene as quickly as possible,but the fire had gained such headway before being noticed that it was impossible to getat the fire-ftghting apparatus inside the building upstairs.
