er9x1 6x1 7x1 2 inches. In the center of the bay is a pit about 1 0feet below the floor level in which are placed the circulating pump and engine. The engineis an American Ball compound. The pumpis a 30-inch double feed centrifugal, made byByron Jackson, direct-connected to the en-gine by flexible link couphng. The pumpdraws water from the river through a 36-inch cast iron pipe and forces it through thecondenser, where it cools and condenses theexhaust steam, and passes back to the riverthrough a similar 36-inch pipe. On account of the extreme fluctuation inthe height of the Sacramento River, (over 25feet), special provision had to be made forthe intake and discharge piping. A wharfwas constructed well out into the river, prop-erly protected by a fender or spring line ofpiling. The top of the wharf is well abovethe high water level. The main intake pipeis horizontal and about I 0 feet above the lowwater mark. At the end is a special tee jointwhich revolves in cast bearings. At the end
