In many places duct lines were broken andcables pulled out of shape and mechanicallystrained very badly. Besides these strains. It was a notorious fact that these arcinggrounds set up surges on the I 1,000 voltsystem which almost invariably caused troubleat weak points of the system to such an extentthat reports of trouble usually came first fromstations remote from the original station af-fected. This may, at first, sound ratherparadoxical but is easily explained by thefact that the operator at the station mostaffected was too busy getting started again totelephone, and instructions had been given for
