Afterthe possibilities of the system had been suc- cessfully demonstrated by these stations, Mr.Beach Thompson and other San Franciscocapitalists became interested in the proposi-tion and spent a large sum of money in build-ing new stations and carrying on experimentalwork for over a year. At the end of thattime they became convinced of its merits, andof the fact that successful and reliable com-munication by wireless over land at all times,and over practical commercial distances, wasat last possible. Freak messages sent overgreat distances are frequently made mentionof in the papers, but the possibility of send-ing such messages may occur only once amonth or once a year, which makes them ofno value for commercial purposes.
