The WeU at the Springs About fifteen years ago several partiesundertook to drill for oil at the springs and awell was bored about 600 feet deep. Butsuch difficulty was encountered that the en-terprise had to be abandoned. Natural gaswas struck in large quantities at the depth ofabout 200 feet, but as the springs were notopen to the public at the time no developmentswere made. The gas was shut off by the casing and was not struck again in going downto the 600-fcot mark, where the formationwas solid stone. Several weeks were spentin trying to penetrate this substance, for theprospectors entertained hopes of striking theoil they were seeking underneath; but thedrilling process of those days was slow ascompared to the improved methods of thepresent and the facilities for handling the drillwere not good, and as a result the drill andsome small tools were lost and the efforts ofthe prospectors were blocked.
