Title
English: Pacific Coast Steamship Company steamer RAMONA at the dock, probably in Seattle, ca. 1911
Description
English:

PH Coll 794.83

In 1902 the Pacific Coast Steamship Co. took delivery of the wooden steamship RAMONA, a freight and passenger vessel of dimensions 195x32x15 ft. designed for the Southern California run. She did not work out well for that service, however, and was later assigned to the southeastern Alaska trade and to the Vancouver route. On September 10, 1911, the RAMONA ran ashore on Spanish Island, Alaska, in thick fog. Capt. Taafe ran her ashore at full speed, allowing all passengers and crew to escape before the hull broke up and sunk in some of the most dangerous waters of Alaska. (Source: Newell, Gordon, ed. "The H.W. McCurdy Marine History of the Pacific Northwest." Seattle: The Superior Company, 1966.)
