Summary

[edit]
Description

A model of the Clyde paddle steamer PS Glen Sannox at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. She was built of steel in 1892 by J&G Thomson, Clydebank for the Glasgow & South Western Railway. The Glen Sannox measured 260 ft x 30 ft x 10 ft, weighed 610 tons gross and had a 333 nhp Thomson steam engine. She was broken up in 1925.

The model to the right is the Clyde screw steamer SS Queen Mary built of steel in 1933 by Denny, Dumbarton for Williamson-Buchanan Steamers. She measured 252 ft x 35 ft x 10 ft and weighed 917 tons gross. She was powered by Parsons steam turbines of 350 nhp (c. 1,650 ihp) and had 3 screws. She was converted from coal to oil firing as late as 1957 and one funnel (as pictured) replaced her two.

Ownership passed to the LMSR in 1936 which transferred her to the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. the same year (Caledonian-MacBrayne in 1974). In 1978 she was withdrawn from service and ownership passed through many hands (including Bass Charrington who converted her into a floating pub on the Thames 1997-2009) before returning to the Clyde in 2016 for restoration.
