English: Pictured, A Ranger Regiment team Sergeant trials the Dismounted Situational Awareness (DSA) equipment during PROJECT HERMOD 2 Dismounted Situational Awareness is a programme that will be equipping the British Infantry soldier with a new suite of communications equipment (made up of radios, hubs to manage power and data, centralised power source and End User Device) to enable both voice and data to be used to communicate on operations in the future. The system will provide the location of soldiers to a commander, allow the commander and their subordinates to visualise geospatial, picture and message data in a way that until now has only been possible in headquarters locations. The key themes that it addresses are: where am I, where are my soldiers, where is the enemy and what are my orders. The digital mapping shows your own location via GPS and you can set your own location should you lose GPS signal. Troops locations are shown by a dot on the map, they can mark and send the location of enemy forces, send overlays and markers, plan operations and send pictures and text as you would do over a mobile phone. The system provides the modern soldier with information faster that reading out information over a radio with a map, pencil and compass. Although a soldier will still need to know how to revert to map and compass, the speed of communication enables a faster decision making cycle in the tactical environment, that will give us an advantage over our opponents. PROJECT HERMOD 2 is an event run for members of the intelligence and security committee and the House of Commons defence committee. It will showcase the Army Special Operations (rangers), UK stratcom, innovation, and digitisation. |
