De diaken Filippus (Hand. 8 : 26-39) met het gesloten boek in handen, doopt de donkerhuidige kamerdienaar-opperschatmeester van Candace, koningin van Ethiopië. In de achtergrond ziet men de voorafgaande gebeurtenissen : links, in een berglandschap, op een brugje over de rivier, ziet men hoe Filippus, op bevel van de engel, naast de wagen van de Ethiopiër loopt en hem aanspreekt; rechts het gespan in een kromming van de weg, terwijl Filippus de H. Schrift verklaart. In de lucht, tenslotte, de engel die Filippus wegvoert. Dit merkwaardig ikonografisch gegeven houdt ongetwijfeld verband met de opdrachtgever. Het schilderij bevond zich in het altaar van de Sint-Corneliuskapel V, kapel van de familie Triest. De vader en een broeder van bisschop Triest waren Philippe geheten; de vader, overleden in 1601, was ter plaatse begraven en het is hoogstwaarschijnlijk dat het schilderij in dit verband moet worden gezien. Het werd vóór 1819 (de Goesin, 39) naar de krypte overgebracht en ter plaatse vervangen door het werk van de Cauwer (nr. 493). Vóór 1853 boven de ingang van de sakristie geplaatst; naderhand gerestaureerd en in kapel XXVIII ; sindsdien in kapel XXVI. P. L.
