5. JEANNE FAITE PRISONNIERE, A COMPIEGNE. Jeanne avait déclaré que sa mission se bornerait à faire lever le siège d'Orléans et à faire sacrer le roi à Reims. Elle resta cependant à l'armée et désirait marcher sur Paris. Les tergiversations du conseil, qui négociait sans elle, retardèrent tellement son désir que ce n'est que le 26 août qu'elle se trouve à Saint Denis où, le 7 septembre, elle fut rejointe par le roi. Blessée, le roi lui interdit un nouvel effort. Elle suspendit son armure à Saint Denis, en «ex-voto », et la retraite commença. Au printemps 1430 Jeanne va secourir Compiègne assiégée quoique les voix lui disent qu'elle serait prise. Tombée aux mains des Bourguignons, elle tente de s'enfuir mais, blessée grièvement, le Comte de Luxembourg la vendit aux Anglais représentés par l'évêque de Beauvais : Pierre Cauchon. Conduite à Rouen, Jeanne assiste, devant un tribunal ecclésiastique, à un procès qui fut un long martyre. Qualifiée d'hérétique, Jeanne fut livrée au bras séculier et condamnée à être brulée vive. |
