V. LES EPHÉMÈRES (EPHEMERA VULGATA) Ces insectes, qui appartiennent à l'ordre des névroptères, sont connus pour leur courte vie à l'état parfait. En effet, leur bouche est impropre à l'alimentation et les quelques heures qui suivent leur éclosion, qui a lieu généralement au coucher du soleil, ne sont occupées que par un vol nuptial. Cette éclosion donne souvent un nombre énorme d'insectes qui ne tardent pas à couvrir les berges de leurs dépouilles. Le vol de l'éphémère est caractéristique: il s'élève par quelques coups d'ailes, se laisse descendre en planant dans le même axe et répète ce manège en changeant peu de place. La larve se développe, suivant les espèces, pendant un, deux ou trois ans. Celle de l'Ephémère vulgaire creuse une galerie (à droite de l'image) dans le fond argileux des cours d'eaux et se nourrit de petites proies. Ses pattes fouisseuses lui donnent l'aspect d'une courtilière; elle respire au moyen de trachéo-branchies qui ondulent continuellement. L'éphémère adulte atteint 22m/m de long. |
