Hannibal, die, jong nog uit Carthago vertrokken was, in zoowat 20 jaar verschillende Romeinsche konsuls had gedood en gansche legers van de republiek had vernietigd, vond thans zijn meester in den zoon van den bij Trebia verslagen konsul, in den overwinnaar van Spanje. Tegenover 50 Punische olifanten (nog nimmer waren er zóoveel in een slag bijeen), tegenover de krijgshaftige bataljons Spanjaarden, Liguriërs en Galliërs, getuigen van vele overwinningen der jongste jaren, bracht Scipio een leger in het, veld, in 3 linies opgesteld waarvan de voorste bestond uit lichte, uiteen vechtende cohorten. De taak van deze linie was, den stormloop der olifanten te breken. Gescheiden, weldra afgemat, dol, werden de reusachtige dieren voor het meerendeel door hun eigen cornacs gedood; enkele liepen terug naar de Carthaagsche linies, achtervolgd door het Romeinsch voetvolk, dat, met één slag. wraak nam over den smaad bij het Trasimeensch meer en Cannae ondergaan. Hannibal kon Carthaeo bereiken en weldra werd een vrede gesloten met voor de Carthagers vernietigende voornaarden. Scirio kwam triomfantelijk Rome weer binnen en ontving den eeretitel van “de Afrikaan“.; |
