A plaque on a house in which Władysław Szpilman was hiding from the Nazis

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A commemorative plaque on the tenement house in Warsaw in which Władysław Szpilman was hiding from the German Nazis in German-occupied Poland. The studio in which Szpilman found shelter from 27 February to 12 August 1943 belonged to his friend, conductor Czesław Lewicki and it was on the last, fifth floor of the house. The house had been built by W. Kamiński in 1937-38.

This is how Szpilman describes the flat in his autobiography "The Pianist": "The flat turned out to be a comfortable, elegantly furnitured studio, not too big, with a recess with the entrance to toilet. On the opposite side of the recess there was a large wardrobe in the wall and a gas stove next to it. The room had a large sofa, a small wardrobe for clothes, a book shelf, a table and comfortable chairs. The small library was rich in sheet music and scores; I also came across several scientific books there. I felt as if I were in heaven."

The plaque was installed by "Frank" in 2020.
