| Description |
Different types of seacraft sailing in the Grand Harbour which for centuries had been the hub of Malta’s commerce and naval power. Some sail for pleasure while others do it as part of their job. One of the three seacraft depicted in this photograpgh is a tug boat which carries the Harbour Pilot. The Pilot is an important person as no ship is permitted to navigate within the harbour area without a Pilot. His work is to facilitate the navigation of big ships through the shallows and other shipping in the Grand Harbour. The Pilot’s tug boat also carries the doctor who would certify that the ship is clean of any diseases which can pose a problem to the island. The doctor would board the incoming ship before it enters harbour and when he declares the all clear a yellow flag is hoisted denoting that the ship is clean and may enter harbour. A Pilot’s job is not an easy one, on the contrary as it is difficult to guide a mammoth of a ship in the cluttered and restricted space of the Grand Harbour - Valletta - Malta |
