Summary

[edit]
Description

Held after the harvest each year the marionette ceremonies among the Marka people are run by the young people who in Africa must always obey and respect their elders. During this festival the young have the opportunity to express through pantomime their views of what needs to change in the community, the directions they believe the community should take and if necessary to satirise the elders and demonstrate the errors they see from the past year. They have many puppet characters which perform on a mobile stage wandering among the crowd during the ceremonies.

In this way everyone has a voice. Democracy?

These pieces are often carved and constructed by the people who dance with them hence the naive style of the carving. Occasionally the village carvers will help. This piece does appear to have had some professional imput.

This piece last performed Near Segou, Mali in the harvest ceremony of 1999. It measures 43 x 110 x 17 cm It can be dismantled for international postage and is easily reassembled.
