Description

This old mask shows wear and use. It was collected in 2000 in Tanzania. It was sold to me as Sukumu but i have reference indicating that it is more likely to be from the Zigua people. "Mask with square eyes and mouth. Simply planed face with chin projecting slightly downward. The Characteristic Tanzanian face mask is put directly on the face, the wearer seeing through the eyes. A large hat of straw and featherswith a matching faffia skitr completes the costume." from A Tanzanian Tradition: : Doei, Iraku, Kerewe, Makonde, Nyamwezi, Pare, Zaramo, Zig, by CHARLES (ESSAY).
