Description |
Frank B. Glynn Sawmill, Coleman Valley 1887. Men numbered at bottom and identified: 1: Mr. Withem, 2: Frank B. Glynn 3: Herman Gerhardt, 18: John Bones 19: George Glynn, Son of F.B. Handwritten on verso by Ralph Sturgeon and identified as "Logging 66": " Supplied from the files of Petaluma Argus Carrier--by Mrs. David Craig.(Note Mr. David Craig--daughter of McCaugheys--who owned & ran store in Bodega). April, 1886. A young man by the name of Wm. Ritchie met with a severe accident in the woods at Glynn's sawmill last Friday. In assisting in hauling logs, one of his legs was caught between the log and a stump. Breaking it in two or three places below the knee. The doctor, three of them, wanted to amputate the leg, but the young man objected, so they are trying to save him, leg and all. I heard the physicians, one of them, that is say, "if there was any man could get through this one could as his health was good, having neither poisoned his blood with alcohol or tobacco. This young man had an arm thrown out of joint a week previous. J Grantfield also met with a slight accident at the same sawmill last week. He was knocked over by a rope breaking on the bull-wheel of the mill. Wm . Hodges, an employee at Glynn's mill, lost a piece of his forefinger on his right hand last week." In visiting William Kingwell, Dec. 12, 1974, he told me Glynn also lost a man in the woods. He thought it was a chopper. I and Norma were honored guest last Sat. evening at the Odd Fellows Hall in Sebastopol when William Kingwell received his 75th Jewel (pin). His son pinned it on him. His son lives in Grass Valley. Will stayed with his daughter Alice Starr for a few days before going back to O.O.F. home in Saratoga & then points south. Later a change--he's going to San Francisco by Greyhound & then to Sacramento to meet his son & wife there, then on south. A lodge member brought him up from Saratoga last Sat. PM for the doings. That's a trip in itself for Will was 96 Aug 30 last August, 1974. |
