Summary

[edit]
Description

A Korean automotive term that foreigners do not recognize at first is the "P-Turn." And this sign illustrates one.

At the next intersection (shown here as "Sinchon Rotary"), and at many busier intersections in the urban core areas, left turn may not be possible at all. The best way to cope in such situations is to overshoot the intersection and do a series of right turns around a block, until I am going in the correct direction. This particular sign instructs motorists to make a clockwise series of turns around Woori Bank, in order to head left in the direction of Yonsei University. The cumulative maneuvers form the shape of the letter P, hence the term P-Turn. In Seoul's city center, the P-Turn is a driver's best friend.

As in other major Old World cities, driving in urban parts of Seoul (or any other South Korean major city) is not a good idea, especially on Saturday afternoons, when all the citizens, who had used mass transit for the daily commutes, bring their cars out for the weekend getaway. By November, I would find that out the hard way, as I hit the streets of Seoul myself in a rental car. (Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of my driving was done where it should've been - in remote rural areas.)
