Description

Church dates from the 12th century onwards, and was restored in the late 19th century. It was not mentioned in the Domesday book, although there is evidence of Norman stonework the church, and possible artefacts of Saxon origin within the church. The chancel has a blocked Norman doorway, blocked 12th C. window and pillar piscina. The church consists of a western tower, nave with north and south aisles, north porch, vestry, and chancel. The tower dates from the late 14th century, is of two stages and has an embattled parapet with pinnacles. The tower takes up a half Bay of the three Bay nave. The south aisle is later and wider than the north aisle, it was probably widened in the late 17th or early 18th century. The chancel dates from the 12th century but was rebuilt in the 19th century and retained a 14th century three light east window. The clerestory was added in the early 19th century and has three rectangular windows. The nave has box pews from the 17th and 18th century. There is a 17th-century chair and prie-dieu with decorative carvings. The nave also contains five hatchments to members of the Sherbrooke family who were Lords of the Manor for some 400 years. There is an effigy, said to be Robert de Nottingham in the south aisle, dating from the 14th century. In the 20th century the church suffered with subsidence from Calverton coalmine. This was stabilised by the National Coal Board.

The east window is the only stained-glass in the church, and is a Memorial to the dead of the first war.
