Summary
[edit]DescriptionOwlfly - Ugly duckling? (5354270906).jpg |
It was an honour to see one of these flying and land on twigs low enough for me to photograph. This one flew in circles around the tree I was standing near. It looked very much like a large flying dragonfly. It flew in straight lines and landed on dead sticks at approximately 1 metre from the ground. When it was disturbed, it flew around in circles again and landed at about 2 metres, again on dead sticks on a tree. It stayed for approximately 15 mins before flying off. "Owlflies are one of the "ugly ducklings" of insects. The grotesque larvae are voracious predators in leaf litter and on trees. They sit and wait for prey to stray in between their oversize mandibles, seizing them and feeding on the body liquids within. The adults are elegant strong-flying insects which are sometimes confused with dragonflies." The Australian Museum website has some wonderful photos and information in regards to Owlflies, including photos of eggs and larvae Abdomen approx 3cm long.
