Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A large boulder at Draper Park in Owego, New York contains a plaque dedicated to the memory of the park's namesake, Amos Draper, who in 1787 was the first white man to settle in what's now Owego. The larger of the two riverfront parks that bookend the Owego Riverwalk, Draper Park along with its counterpart were established in 1926 under the initiative of village president Charles D. Marvin to mark the sesquicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. The boulder was hauled to its site from Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania and dedicated the following August 9th as part of the celebrations for Old Home Week, which also included a speech by State Senator James S. Truman on Draper's historical significance. The Court Street Bridge, spanning the Susquehanna River, is seen in the background at right. As seen on a frigid February 2022 evening.
