e part of the villageand is situated on either side of its Main Street.The value of the property, including its endowments,amounts to about $3,000,000. The college is non-sectarian and has an enrollment at the present timeof about 500 students. One can profitably spend hours visiting thesebuildings, many of which are historical. Some of thebuildings of the college campus of special interestare: Thompson Memorial Chapel, of great architec-tural beauty; within this chapel are exquisite memo-rial windows, one to the memory of a former Presi-dent of the United States, James A. Garfield; Hop-kins Hall is the administration building and waserected in memory of a former president, Mark Hop-kins ; Grace Hall contains one of the finest organs inthe country, and is where the commencement exercisesare held. Just back of Grace Hall, in Mission Park,is Haystack Monument, which marks the birthplaceof foreign missions. Here, in 1811, a few of theWilliams College students gathered about a haystack 29

o Oh and held a prayer meeting. Each agreed to give hislife to preaching to the heathen. Out of this gather-ing developed the American Board of Commissionersof Foreign Missions. Many objects of interest may be seen at the Col-lege Library and at the Geological Museum. SigmaPhi fraternity house is built of the material fromthe former Van Rensselaer house of Albany. Grey-lock Hotel was built in 1870. This was the site ofthe first inn, built in 1780. Harry A. Garfield, son of former President JamesA. Garfield, is now president of Williams College.His residence is on the north side of Main Street,beyond the church. Williamstown lies in the northwest corner of Mas-sachusetts. Bennington, Vermont, the scene of theearly battles of the Revolution, is situated fourteenmiles to the north. Continuing westward from Williamstown we followthe old Mohawk Trail until from a high point wegain a glorious view of the Hudson, whose valley wasthe home of the Mohawk tribe of Indians. 31 UJJ *2 *fl —— 1
