France viewed these cessions to Germany, Russia, and Englandwith natural jealousy, and immediately sought and obtained fromChina as compensation a ninety-nine years lease of the Bay ofKwang-chau-wan (April, 1898). Italy was now reported to have made demands upon the Chinesegovernment for something as compensation to her for what theother powers had received.
