l take him inside the canoe, if youwant, I replied, though I had no notionof doing it. I hauled on the line till the fish wastwice his length from me and was try-ing to hold him there when the creaturedived till the line ran straight down. Then it loosened, and like an arrowfrom a bow something shot up from thedepths, dashing gallons of water in myface as it passed. I couldnt look up,but I wondered what would happen.Just as I concluded that this tarpon, like the last, had cleared the canoe inhis fall, the craft gave a twist, a roll, and plunged me, shoulder first, beneaththe surface! No matter how well protected the motor may be, the interiorof the boat, the floor boards, the insideof the planking, the seats and cushions, and every part of the equipment andfurnishings will give better service ifthey are kept dry, and it is consequentlyas much of a duty owed to the craftitself as it is to the passengers to pro-vide some sort of protection from thespray and rain. To be sure, a man can provide himselfwith a slicker and oilskins and keepas dry in the heaviest rain or spray asthough he were snugly ensconced in acabin, but the subsequent time andtrouble spent in bailing and drying outthe interior of the boat and polishing therusted metal parts will make the ownerwish his craft, as well as himself, couldbe provided with
