d it is small won-der that they defeated Harvard, 11 to o;Williams, 17 to o; Amherst, 18 to o; and overwhelmed Brown in the lastgame of the season by 62 to o. Thestrange feature of their career, like thatof many other noted teams, was a slumpin midseason. Dartmouth, in view ofthe men on her team that year, expectedto defeat Princeton. There were many others who thoughtso too, but the result proved that theyhad misjudged the situation for Prince-ton won 17 to o. The Dartmouthteam never got on its feet in that gamefrom start to finish, but in spite of thatdefeat this team made a big start forDartmouth football and paved the wayfor further great teams. Hooper, the center on the team thatyear, was one of the best in the positionand was chosen on the All Americateam. Other men of prominence wereWitham, Glaze, Vaughn, Maine, Gil-man, Foster, and Lillard, later the Dart-mouth coach. The following year they again playedone or two games brilliantly, beatingPrinceton, 6 to 5 ; Annapolis, 11 to o,and taking revenge on the Indians by de-feating them 17 to 6. But they weretied by Williams, neither side scoring,and beaten by Yale, Harvard, andPrinceton, in the two latter games, 24 too and 30 to o. In 1901 they defeated Pennsylvania,11 to O, and Carlisle, 40 to 12, but werebeaten by Cornell, 24 to o and Syracuse,11 to 5; also losing to Harvard andYale, but by lesser scores.
