Thereason is that they are not to any greatextent quail hunters themselves. Bar-ring the market hunters, now fast passinginto oblivion under better game legisla-tion, the farmer does not consider thequail equal in value to the ammunition be of the best. Accommodation can behad easily in farmhouses, and barring adisposition on the part of the boys of anoccasional family to take part in thehunt and to bang away with blackpowder at every rabbit in a manner dis-concerting to the sportsman and thesportsmans dog, such a place is to bepreferred. The empty cabin or house in the coun-try has the further advantage of beingalways near cultivated fields or aban-doned ones where the game is to befound. This method of hunting is notcommon in the South, but it works outsplendidly and saves many long andtedious drives morning and night, overalmost impossible roads. My own personal equipment on sucha trip which has often had as its ob-jective a point not more than a dozenmiles from home does not vary, exceptas to the tent which is carried when nocabin is available. It consists, first ofall, of a covered wagon for two horsesor mules, the cover being of the prairie-schooner variety common in the South.This affords protection for the outfit incase of rain and shelter for the dogswhich are bedded in hay in the wagonwhile in camp.
