es is theprohibition of the use of superlatives inthe columns of the Herald, Mr. Bennettindulges in all sorts of superlativeness topromote the interests of his newspapers.On election nights, the Heralds signalsearchlight must be placed on the highesttower in all New York. In the hurryingof the early editions to the trains, theHerald must be carted by the fastest ofthe newspaper delivery automobiles. Inits reports of opera premieres, of summerresort news and of foreign happenings, theHerald must have more pictures and devotemore space than any other paper. If an-other newspaper has six men on the Van-derbilt Cup race, the Herald must haveseven. Everything must center on the se-curing (this word is also a Herald dont)of a beat, i.e., something exclusive. Itis related that the entire staff of one of theHeralds departments was discharged atone time because another metropolitanpaper had printed a beat in its line.
