t with cargo. While every county in Florida demandsfrom the non-resident sportsman the pay-ment of ten dollars for a hunting licensebefore he may so much as take aim at birdor beast, the angler is subjected to no suchrestriction. He may take fish by fairmeans, in any Florida waters, withoutprice or question; and as all these waters, fresh as well as salt, swarm with fish of alldegrees of excellence and pugnacity, thecruiser, who also is a fisherman, will findevery opportunity for the pursuit of hisfavorite sport. Nor need he fear goinghungry while traversing these prolificwaters, if he is provided with tackle andbait. If he would fish only for sport andthe excitement of battle, the mighty tarpon,Silver King of finny tribes, often tippingthe beam at two hundred pounds; and theagile bonefish, weighing less than ten, butdarting with the swiftness of a hawk, andfighting with a hawks persistent energy, will give him every opportunity for testinghis skill and power of endurance againsttheirs.
Text Appearing After Image:
Florida 489 If he must fish at the command of appe-tite, he will find pompano and Spanishmackerel, kingfish, and grouper, big-mouthed bass and perch, mangrove snap-per, and yellowtail, besides scores of oth-ers, all admirably adapted to the fryingpan or the chowder pot, awaiting him atevery mile of his Florida cruising. Besidesthese, he will find crawfish, as large as lob-sters and more delicate, oysters and clamsby the bushel, shrimp to be scooped in bythe netful, turtle and terrapin to delightthe heart of an epicure, and turtle eggsfreshly buried in warm beach sands. Ch,no! the Florida cruiser need never fearhunger, even though his entire supply ofboughten grub should become ex-hausted without chance of renewal, if onlyhe has the knowledge and skill to help him-self from natures abundance. He must learn, probably from expe-rience, for he is not likely to profit bywritten advice, especially if he be youngand self-confident, that many biting andstinging insects abound in certain parts
