en-able sportsmen to always have that mostdesirable factor in a successful expedition,a base of supplies, near at hand, and it iswild enough to give the greatest possibleamount of sport. In many respects itresembles the Adirondacks some twentyyears ago. Starting from St. Paul the first im-portant sheet of water is White BearLake, twelve miles north of the city. Itis five miles long, three miles wide andabout two hundred feet deep. The lakeis the pleasure ground for the peopleof St. Paul, and at Manitou Island, whichis situated near the west shore, there aremany cottages, mansions and hotels. Theisland is half a mile long, two hundredyards wide, and it rises from the lakeabout thirty feet. It is traversed byhard gravelly drives and walks that arelighted by electricity at night. The wa-ters around the island bear many craft,from the tiny canoe, that can be carriedin one hand, to large and handsome steamlaunches. This system has worked so perfectly thatit would seem worthy of adoption in otherplaces. A mile farther north is the Bald EagleLake, a beautiful sheet of water threemiles long by a mile wide. The road from 4o6 OUTING FOR MARCH. the station on the railroad to the lake isabout half a mile long, winding its waythrough a great oak forest and under wide-spreading and interlacing boughs, whichcurtain the soft grass like canopies ofgreen. This lake is very popular with thepeople of the Twui Cities, for it is quietand secluded, and the shores, owing to thetotal absence of marsh, are particularlywell adapted for camping parties or cot-tage builders.
